Around the Table: Where One Coppell Begins

Event One: Community Connections & Shared Experiences

August 21, 2025

Community members listen intently to the introduction of Together We Dine™

The chairs were still being arranged when the first guests arrived. They came as strangers, some lifelong Coppell residents, others newer to the community, and found their way to round tables set with a warm meal and an open question: What do we actually have in common?

Together We Dine™ didn't arrive out of nowhere. It grew from more than ten years of intentional community building in Coppell, from a community allyship program that brought residents and City staff together in small cohorts around kitchen tables, to the Vision 2040 Strategic Plan, crafted by the community and for the community. Through that process, Coppell residents were clear: they wanted a city where everyone belongs, where every neighbor feels welcomed, and where diversity is a strength. One Coppell, and Together We Dine™ as one of its centerpieces was the answer to that call.

The August event drew participants from across the region, with attendees coming from Dallas, Denton, and as far as Tulsa, Oklahoma. They represented a wide range of racial and ethnic backgrounds and ages, bringing a richness of perspective to every table.

Project Unity facilitators guided small group conversations about life journeys, community identity, and the invisible forces that shape how we see one another. Participants consistently said the format felt safe, non-confrontational, and opened doors to perspectives they hadn’t expected.

What they took home was simpler than any statistic:

That even though we have diverse backgrounds, there’s a lot more similarities here than I expected.”

”We all have different origin stories that affect our bias.”

”It set me thinking on what I need to do as an individual.

Overwhelmingly, participants said they’d be back.

That willingness to return is exactly what One Coppell is built on. One Coppell is the evolution of Coppell’s community connection efforts — a comprehensive initiative inviting every resident and staff member to participate in building a more connected, welcoming community. Together We Dine™ is one of its signature community conversations: a free, accessible opportunity for every resident to engage, regardless of background or how long they’ve called Coppell home. The August gathering proved the appetite was there. Now the work of building on it begins.
